Children's Dentistry

Children’s Dentistry at Beecroft Smiles Dental Surgery focuses on promoting and preserving bright, healthy smiles through preventative dental care for our youngest patients.

During the initial visit, we conduct a thorough examination, which may include a cleaning and consultation. We inform parents about the proper eruption of their child’s teeth, identify any existing issues, and determine if extraction of baby teeth is necessary to facilitate the arrival of permanent ones. Additionally, we engage in discussions regarding potential orthodontic treatment, ensuring comprehensive care for your child’s dental health.

Frequently Asked Questons about Children's Dentistry

It’s generally recommended that a child should have their first dental check-up by their first birthday or within 6 months of their first tooth appearing, whichever comes first. The Australian Dental Association (ADA) advises that the first visit should coincide with the appearance of the first tooth, which typically occurs around 9 months of age. After the initial visit, regular check-ups are important, with many children needing annual visits. However, those at higher risk of tooth decay may require more frequent check-ups.Early dental visits serve multiple purposes:

  1. Familiarizing children with the dental environment
  2. Early detection of dental issues
  3. Providing advice to parents on oral care

In Australia, there are various options for children’s dental care, including public dental services for eligible families and the Child Dental Benefits Schedule (CDBS) for basic dental services.Remember, early and regular dental check-ups are crucial for establishing good oral health habits and maintaining your child’s dental health throughout their life.

Parents can encourage their children maintain good oral health by several ways:

  • Help your child brush their teeth twice a day using small circular motions until around age 7-8.
  • Use a soft-bristled toothbrush and fluoride toothpaste suitable for children

  • Supervise flossing until around age 10

  • Encourage a regular tooth brushing routine and praise good brushing.

  • Ensure your child eats a healthy, balanced diet and avoids sugary foods/drinks

Parents should take their child to the dentist if the child develops any of the following:

  • Bleeding, red or swollen gums
  • Pus coming from the gums
  • A bad taste in the mouth that won’t go away
  • Abscesses (which can be very painful)

A child typically gets their first tooth around the age of 6 months, though this can vary. Here are the key points:

  1. On average, a child’s first tooth will start to appear around 6 months of age.
  2. However, the timing can vary considerably. The first tooth may come in sooner or several months later, depending on the individual child.
  3. The Australian Dental Association (ADA) notes that the first baby tooth usually appears around 9 months of age, but it can emerge anytime between 3-12 months.
  4. The bottom front teeth (central incisors) are typically the first to appear.
  5. By around 3 years of age, all 20 baby teeth are usually present

The first tooth isn’t necessarily the worst for teething. Teething experiences vary greatly among children. While the first tooth can be challenging because it’s a new experience, some babies may have more difficulty with later teeth. The discomfort typically lasts about a week for each tooth. The perception of which tooth is “worst” often depends on individual factors and how well the baby and parents adapt to the teething process over time.
